How to Inculcate Oral Hygiene in Your Kids?

Happy Teeth of the Happy Kid

Parents are the first role models of their children. Whatever the children see you doing, they will imitate whether you know it or not. In fact, if you have ever noticed, even after you grow up, you tend to act more like your father if you are a male and as your mother if you are a female. Same is the case with your kids. So, if you want them to learn something, make it your habit and lead by example.

Let’s start with pointers on how to inculcate oral hygiene among your kids. Now, they cannot brush their teeth till they are almost 3, so basically it takes a bit of training at that time.

Teach them the Elements

Tell your kids about teeth

Tell them about teeth, their importance and why they should be healthy. Not only should they be educated about healthy gums and protection against cavities but also the primary importance of keeping them white. Do not ignore if the gums of your kid are black or teeth are stained yellow. It just shows improper brushing technique. Take them to a dentist for a yearly checkup. It is important for kids. Also, tell them about the process involved - brushing, flossing and tongue cleansing.

Brushing

Choose a soft bristle brush

Choose a soft bristle brush or take the help of your dentist to choose a good brush for your family and your kid. Remember that they have milk teeth, so being gentle is the key. Also, ask your dentist to teach them the correct way of brushing. A good rhyme might help you out. And, yes, do not forget the ‘twice a day’ brushing rule for which you will also have to learn to brush your teeth at night as well.

And, while you are teaching them how to brush their teeth, a good lesson would also involve how much toothpaste is enough to brush their teeth to avoid overuse, how to squeeze the toothpaste out of the tube neatly and how to save water during the whole process of brushing. Personally, I think we do waste a lot of water when performing this mundane task!

Flossing

Tell your kids why it's good to floss

You MUST start flossing your kid's teeth by the age of 4 and start teaching them how to when they reach 7 or 8. Tell them why it is good to floss.

Tongue Cleansing

Ayurveda also recommends cleaning one's tongue

Ayurveda also recommends cleaning one's tongue to get rid of the toxins and buildup on the tongue. Buy plastic scrapers which are not too sharp on the edges and make sure everyone in your family uses one.

The bacteria on the tongue can also result in bad breath and more often it's the bacteria on the tongue than the teeth or poor brushing technique. It is said that tongue scraping can destroy the taste buds. Actually, that is not true at all. Instead, the sense of taste gets refined due to removal of all the buildup on the tongue. So, next time you scrape off your tongue, do not worry that you will lose your sense of taste.

These are just a few ways to help your child learn about oral hygiene. Grooming is one of the most important responsibilities of the parent and oral hygiene does take foremost place. No one likes to talk to people who smell bad. So, do make sure to take care of your kid's teeth.
